Superior Korean Radish/Daikon

Planted 7 September, germination in 7 days. High (close to 100%) germination rate. The short Korean Daikon is more user friendly for home gardeners than the longer Japanese types but the seed is very hard to come by. Great that Wonder Seeds has made it available. There is a danger that daikon planted in Spring will bolt but hopefully this won't happen with this variety. Fingers crossed.

  1. Planting Seeds:

    • Sow Korean radish seeds directly in the garden or in containers. Plant the seeds about 1 to 2 cm deep in well-draining soil.
  2. Spacing:

    • Space rows about 30 to 45 cm apart to allow enough room for the radishes to develop. Individual radishes within a row should be spaced approximately 10 to 15 cm apart.
  3. Location:

    • Choose a sunny location for your Korean radish. Full sun exposure promotes healthy growth.
  4. Soil Preparation:

    • Plant Korean radishes in well-draining soil with a pH level between 5.8 and 6.8. Enrich the soil with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure.
  5. Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the radish's active growth phase. Provide about 2.5 cm of water per week.
  6. Fertilization:

    • Use a balanced fertilizer when planting, and consider additional applications during the growing season according to the package instructions.
  7. Thinning:

    • Thin the radish seedlings once they are a few centimeters tall, leaving the strongest ones spaced appropriately.
  8. Mulching:

    • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the radishes to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain consistent soil temperature.
  9. Pest Control:

    • Monitor for pests such as aphids or flea beetles. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests become problematic.
  10. Harvesting:

    • Harvest Korean radishes when they reach the desired size, typically around 20 to 30 cm in length. Harvest promptly to ensure a crisp and sweet taste.
