  1. Planting Seeds:

    • Sow seeds directly in the garden from late summer to early autumn.
    • Plant seeds 1-2cm deep in moist, fertile soil.
  2. Spacing:

    • Space rows about 25-30cm apart.
    • Thin seedlings to 10–15 cm apart once established.
  3. Location:

    • Grows well in full sun to partial shade.
    • Prefers cool weather, ideal for fall harvests.
  4. Soil Preparation:

    • Use loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Ideal pH is 6.0-7.0.
    • Avoid heavy clay soils that hinder root development.
  5. Watering:

    • Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
    • Water consistently to avoid root cracking.
  6. Fertilization:

    • Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser to support root growth.
    • Avoid over-fertilizing, which may lead to leafy tops and small roots.
  7. Thinning:

    • Thin sedlings early to allow enough space for root development.
    • Use thinned plants in soups or salads.
  8. Mulching:

    • Mulch with straw or shredded leaves to maintain moisture and reduce weeds.
  9. Pest Control:

    • Monitor for pests such as aphids or flea beetles. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests become problematic.
  10. Harvesting:

    • Harvest turnips when roots are 5-8 cm in diameter and still tender.
    • Younger roots are milder and crisper.
