The seeds I bought in early August failed to germinate

The seeds I bought in early August failed to germinate, and only 4 out of 12 seeds I bought in early September germinated.

Thank you for sharing your experience - we completely understand how disappointing it must have been to see only a few seeds germinate.

After receivibg your feed back, we comducted a germination test with seeds from the same batch. All 25 out of 25 seeds germinated.

It seems the low temperature may have been the reason they did not sprout. The optimal germination temperature for cucumber is above 21°C to sprout well, and in Sydney the weather in August and early September is usually still too cold.

For best results, we recommend sowing from mid-September onwards when the soil is warmer, or starting seeds indoors in a warm place and then transplanting the seedlings outside once the weather has settled.

We truly appreciate your feedback and hope this advice helps you.

  1. Planting Seeds:

    • Sow cucumber seeds directly in the garden or start them indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seeds about 1 to 2 cm deep in well-draining soil.
  2. Transplanting:

    • Transplant cucumber seedlings to the garden around 10-15 cm tall, with at least two sets of true leaves.
  3. Spacing:

    • Space cucumber plants about 40-60cm apart in rows that are 90-120 cm apart. Provide ample space for vines to spread.
  4. Location:

    • Choose a sunny location for your cucumber plants. Cucumbers prefer full sun exposure for optimal growth.
  5. Soil Preparation:

    • Plant cucumbers in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Incorporate organic matter like compost into the soil before planting.
  6. Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist. Cucumbers require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage.
  7. Fertilization:

    • Fertilize cucumber plants with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer when transplanting, and then again during the growing season. Follow package instructions for application rates.
  8. Mulching:

    • Using a layer of organic/plastic mulch and row covers will greatly enhance the vigour and potential yields of cucumbers by maintaining more consistent soil temperature, retaining soil moisture, suppressing weeds and promoting insect protection.
  9. Support:

    • Backdadagi cucumber variety may benefit from trellising or other support systems. This helps keep the fruit off the ground, reduces disease risk, and makes harvesting easier.
  10. Pest Control:

    • Monitor for pests such as cucumber beetles or aphids. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests become problematic.
  11. Harvesting:

    • Harvest cucumbers when they reach the desired size.
