  1. Planting Seeds:

    • Sow cucumber seeds directly in the garden or start them indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seeds about 1 to 2 cm deep in well-draining soil.
  2. Transplanting:

    • Transplant cucumber seedlings to the garden around 10-15 cm tall, with at least two sets of true leaves.
  3. Spacing:

    • Space cucumber plants about 40-60cm apart in rows that are 90-120 cm apart. Provide ample space for vines to spread.
  4. Location:

    • Choose a sunny location for your cucumber plants. Cucumbers prefer full sun exposure for optimal growth.
  5. Soil Preparation:

    • Plant cucumbers in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Incorporate organic matter like compost into the soil before planting.
  6. Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist. Cucumbers require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage.
  7. Fertilization:

    • Fertilize cucumber plants with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer when transplanting, and then again during the growing season. Follow package instructions for application rates.
  8. Mulching:

    • Using a layer of organic/plastic mulch and row covers will greatly enhance the vigour and potential yields of cucumbers by maintaining more consistent soil temperature, retaining soil moisture, suppressing weeds and promoting insect protection.
  9. Support:

    • Backdadagi cucumber variety may benefit from trellising or other support systems. This helps keep the fruit off the ground, reduces disease risk, and makes harvesting easier.
  10. Pest Control:

    • Monitor for pests such as cucumber beetles or aphids. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests become problematic.
  11. Harvesting:

    • Harvest cucumbers when they reach the desired size.
